Enjoy the music of Rhythm Child with your family and friends in this live studio recording. It's a behind the scenes look at Rhythm Child recording the acoustic versions of songs featured on Drum Circle Sing-A-Long & Eat A Bowl Of Cherries. This is a rare opportunity to see the creative process at work and to share in the fun of making music. DVD includes live performance, stories and in-depth commentary, Bailey's tour of the studio, extra scenes, and the "Jammy Put On" music video.

History

This film is in fact the first sessions of what would become the Eat a Bowl of Cherries CD. We picked July 7th because it was one of those numerical occurrences that rarely happens when the calendar was on the 7th day of the 7th month in the 2007th year (7/7/07).

Director Chris Halmo was a carry-over from the "Jammy Put On" video shoot and he brought his crew into The Lair, a West LA studio with a mysterious and inviting vibe to it.

The original idea was to go in with Duane’ and record a live acoustic album of material that we had developed from our live show. It had proven to be really hard to get a good recording of our music live because of the loud drums that were being played by the kids in the audience. So rather than try and manipulate one of our performances for the recording we decided to go into a controlled environment and play a show live like there were children in the room. Since we were in a place with a cool vibe we thought it would be cool to bring cameras into the studio and visually capture the recording process.

After having the room set up for lighting and camera access, the session quickly became more about the filming than the perfection of the recording. Once the microphones were in place and the initial recording levels were set we launched into the first song and never really looked back. It was as if we were playing these songs for an audience of one and a crowd of thousands at the same time. The performances were improvised in the same way that we do them on stage; with segues and arrangements happening on the spot. There were a lot of laughs and surprising moments shared between Duane’ and I and the camera crew caught every one of them.

One thing that didn't make the final cut was Bailey's first time in the studio singing "Everybody is the one". I was still working on the song so the lyrics were rough and a little shaky, but Bailey learned his part and stepped up with ease and confidence. A little piece of the session can be seen in "Bailey's tour of the studio" where he takes the camera around to show the audience different parts of the studio.

When we left the studio that day we had well over 3 hours of actual music to sift through and determine whether there was enough usable material to make a film. I waited a few weeks to get the rough cuts and finally saw the amazing footage that we had. The over-all feel was very positive and the performances were solid. We picked the versions that had the least amount of mistakes and put together a live concert that was both intimate and lively.

When it came time to package the film for the DVD we worked with our friend Jeremy Broekman and designed a cover that represented the vibe of the studio. So although the music was upbeat and vibrant, we went with a dark and mysterious approach to reflect the depth of the recording. It was at this point that we solidified the decision to market this as an entertaining film about the musicians performing and not simply as a children's music DVD.
